What are allergies?

Allergies are a common health condition that affects over 50 million Americans every year. They occur when the immune system overreacts to a foreign substance, known as an allergen. The immune system produces antibodies that recognize the allergen as harmful and release chemicals, such as histamine, to fight it off. These chemicals can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, depending on the sensitivity of the person’s immune system. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system’s reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways, or digestive system.

Common allergens include pollen, grass, trees, pet dander, dust mites, and certain foods. Allergies can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, and can impact a person’s quality of life.

What Are Sublingual Allergy Drops?

Sublingual allergy drops, also known as sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) drops, are a form of treatment for allergies. They involve placing drops of allergen extracts under the tongue to help the body build up a tolerance to allergens, which can reduce or eliminate the symptoms of allergies. SLIT drops are an alternative to allergy shots and can be administered at home by the patient. The treatment can provide long-term relief from allergies and can reduce the need for over-the-counter and prescription medications. Allergy drops are generally considered safe and have a low risk of serious side effects.

FAQs

THE ALLERGY TEST

Allergies occur when the body’s immune system responds to a substance it considers an “invader”. Substances that provoke the immune system into an allergic response are known as allergens. What might trigger a life threatening allergies response in one person might not cause any response in another person.
Allergens enter the body either through ingestion, inhalation, or contact with the skin or mucous membranes. Mild allergy symptoms include itchy, dry, red, or watery eyes, a runny nose, scratchy throat, and rashes. More severe symptoms include swelling of the throat, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.

Anyone experiencing the Signs & Symptoms described above on a regular, or seasonal, basis. Allergies can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status. They are caused by a combination of both genetic and environmental influences. Specific allergies are not inherited but the chances of having allergies are greatly increased if an immediate family member has allergies. Undiagnosed allergies can cause long-term health problems.

ALLERGY IMMUNOTHERAPY

Yes, if the test was within the last 9 months and it is from a trusted testing method. Our team of experts can offer better insight on a case by case basis.

Immunotherapy is a treatment directed at decreasing your sensitivity to certain allergens. These particular allergens are identified with allergy testing. Specific amounts of natural allergen extracts are introduced into the body which help to produce antibodies that block allergic symptoms over time. Immunotherapy helps your body build up its natural resistance to the effects of tree, grass, and weed pollen, dust mites, mold spores, and animal dander. It is also the only proven medical treatment available that strengthens the immune system to provide lasting relief and prevent new allergies and asthma. A full course of immunotherapy can lead to long-term relief of your allergy symptoms even after the therapy has stopped. It contains no medication.

Your lab results are color coded and easy to read. If you are positive for 3-5 allergens, you are a mild candidate for immunotherapy treatment. 6-8 you will greatly benefit from personalized immunotherapy drops. 9 or more you are strongly encouraged to start on a personalized treatment plan. Patients typically start seeing positive results within months 2-4 and gradually experience less allergic symptoms over the course of the treatment.

A typical regimen may take 1-3 years depending upon the severity of your allergies and geographic conditions. The first year provides the initial build-up of immunity and subsequent years are known as maintenance.

Over 90% effective when formulated and taken properly. It has been proven in clinical studies to decrease allergy symptoms, medication use, prevent new allergies and asthma in children, and promote lasting-relief of allergy symptoms even after treatment is stopped. Research shows allergy immunotherapy is cost effective and reduces overall health care expenses, including costs from prescription medicine use, office visits, hospitalizations, and missed work/school.

Over the counter medications only temporarily mask allergy symptoms, while immunotherapy is aimed at decreasing the patient’s sensitivity to the allergens by slowly administering increasing amounts of an allergen over several months. Allergy medications also can produce negative side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and insomnia. Allergy immunotherapy is not a medication they are naturally occurring substances.
